The Top 5 Features of the EOS C400
Introducing the Canon Cinema EOS C400: An RF Mount Cinema Camera with a full-frame sensor
Canon’s latest release marks a major advancement in Cinema EOS, featuring an RF mount on a high-end model. The EOS C400 is designed for professional filmmakers, offering versatility across filmmaking, live production, drones, gimbals, and studio setups, all in a compact form.
Let’s take a closer look at what sets the EOS C400 apart.
1. 6K full-frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV7 provide better image quality
This combination offers wide-range AF and colour reproduction. It creates natural tones from low to high brightness areas and noise reduction in dark areas. It has enhanced 4K image quality with 6K oversampling*, supporting Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for precise and reliable autofocus performance. It includes low noise and wide tonality with 16 stops for the EOS C400, equipped with 4 base ISO modes, empowering filmmakers to push creative boundaries without compromise.
2. Supports 4 Base ISO Modes
A key feature of the EOS C400 is its innovative support of 4 Base ISO modes. These modes range from Base ISO 800, Base ISO 3200, Base ISO 12800 and AUTO selection. Users can manually choose from three Base ISO levels from low to high depending on the scene. The camera also features Auto Selection, which automatically switches from one of the three Base ISO levels to another level with a higher S/N ratio, while maintaining the dynamic range accordingly. Whether shooting in bright daylight or dimly lit environments, the EOS C400 ensures exceptional results with minimal noise, allowing filmmakers to capture stunning visuals in any situation.
3. Professional Level Connectivity with Industry Standard Interface
Designed with user convenience in mind, the EOS C400 features an intuitive interface that simplifies operation. The EOS C400 offers a full lineup of I/O including built in Wi-Fi, G-LOCK/SYNC/RET terminal, ethernet terminal, SDI output, MON output and multiple input terminals.
The body allows for full-fledged film and live productions with no additional accessories. The G-LOCK/SYNC/RET and Ethernet terminals are located on the camera body, enabling return and tally inputs without an expansion unit. The camera itself includes all the functions required for live event operations, making live shoots effortless.
4. Flexible Recording Options
Whether shooting in 6K, 4K, or Full HD, the Canon EOS C400 offers versatile recording capabilities to suit diverse production requirements. It also supports multiple codecs such as Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC, XF-HEVC S, XF-AVC S. For XF-HEVC S / XF-AVC S, frame-by-frame metadata is added just like with Cinema RAW Light and XF-AVC, so no matter what format is used, the same reference information is saved, improving management of your shooting data.
Paired with Canon’s RF lens mount system, the EOS C400 records more metadata than before, which can be applied to new solutions such as virtual production.
5. Compact and Light Weight Design
Weighing in at approximately 1550g, the EOS C400 boasts a versatile shape that facilitates seamless integration with a variety of filmmaking accessories, including gimbals, drones, and rigs. This adaptability ensures that filmmakers can confidently explore a multitude of shooting scenarios without being encumbered by heavy equipment or logistical constraints.
In comparison to the EOS C500 Mark II’s body weight of 1750g the EOS C400 reduced overall body weight by 12% making professional filmmaking more accessible and flexible than ever before.
*Recording is possible at up to 6K 60P (RAW) and 4K 120P. When 4K 120P is selected in Super 35mm mode, the angle of view is cropped at approx. 6%.
